TMSS AND SAIL SCHOLARSHIPS

Did you know that the maritime industry is one of Singapore’s fastest growing economic sectors? It contributes to about 7% of Singapore’s GDP and employs more than 170,000 people. With over 5,000 companies in various maritime sectors, the maritime industry offers a myriad of opportunities if you are seeking a career unlike any other.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), in joint partnership with shipping companies, and the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS), offers two types of seafaring scholarships to students, namely the –

  • Tripartite Maritime Scholarship Scheme (TMSS); and the
  • Seafaring Alternative… an Investment for Life (SAIL) Scholarship

The scholarships are offered annually to attract quality candidates to take up seafaring careers where they can aspire to become Captains or Chief Engineers on board ships.

Courses Supported:
Both scholarships cover studies for a Diploma in Nautical Studies (DNS) or Diploma in Marine Engineering (DMR) at the Singapore Maritime Academy, Singapore Polytechnic.

What the Scholarships Offer:

  • Sponsorship for tuition fees and book allowance;
  • Training allowance of S$900 per month during the academic and shipboard training phases; and
  • SAIL savings account (monthly monetary contribution pegged to professional seafaring qualification, and bonus payout upon advancement of each level) – applicable for SAIL scholars only

Criteria for Candidates:

  • Singapore citizen or Singapore permanent resident.
  • 17 to 22 years of age.
  • Good results in the GCE ‘O’ level examinations.
  • Good record of co-curricular activities and/or community service.
  • Pass an approved eye sight test.
