The Offshore and Marine Engineering (OME) Sector
Singapore is the world leader in the building of jack-up rigs and has a 70%21 global market share. It is also the world's top ship repair and ship conversion centre, especially for the conversion of Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) platforms. In addition, it is a niche player in the construction of customised and specialised vessels, and also hosts leading marine equipment manufacturers and classification societies from all over the world.

Playing a crucial part in Singapore's economic growth, the offshore and marine engineering sector derives half of its revenue from the ship repair and conversion sector22. Other key business activities such as shipbuilding, rig building, offshore engineering, and marine support services account for the remaining half.

Workplace safety is a key focus area for the sector as it continues to take proactive measures to promote safety and health in shipyards as well as address and overcome hazards for workers.

Ship Repair and Conversion
Singapore is recognised worldwide for its specialised reconstruction jobs, which range from “jumbo-isation” to conversion (e.g. converting tankers into FPSOs). Strategically positioned along the Middle East-Japan tanker highway, Singapore specialises in tanker repairs and is reputed for high work quality and timely delivery.

Shipbuilding
Shipbuilding in Singapore has progressed from minor projects (such as small fishing boats) to the construction of customised ships and specialised vessels. Ships built in Singapore’s shipyards include offshore support vessels, container vessels, oil tankers etc.

Offshore Engineering
Singapore’s proximity to drilling sites and her well-developed engineering capability came in handy when oil exploration intensified in South-east Asia during the ’60s and the ’70s. She was a natural candidate for offshore fabrication for regional interests. From its first jack-up rig in 1969, Singapore has become the largest builder of such rigs worldwide, with shipyards serving other regions such as Azerbaijan, Brazil and China. Beyond jack-up rigs, Singapore is also the region’s most comprehensive offshore engineering centre, with capabilities in floating production, subsea equipment, pipelines and installation engineering.
