Inaugural MaritimeONE Human Resource Seminar & Forum

The inaugural MaritimeONE Human Resource Seminar & Forum was held at the Marina Mandarin Hotel on 25 November 2009. The seminar was well-attended by over 80 maritime professionals and HR practitioners. Many participants openly shared the challenges they faced in the recruitment of young staff and discussed ways to recruit and retain talents in their organisations and gave constructive suggestions of courses and measures that can be adopted to attract, develop and retain talents in the long run.

The session began with Mr Roland Teo, Deputy Director, Capacity Building Division of the Singapore Business Federation (SBF), speaking on the National Business Continuity Management Programme. SBF oversees the National Business Continuity Programme and the Financial Facilitator Programme at EBIS to help Singapore companies to be ready in terms of business continuity, and to facilitate funding.

Two speakers from Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Maritime Advisory Services then shared with the participants on the findings from a survey conducted with young maritime professionals and their motivational factors. The speakers were Mr. Shahrin Osman, Senior Consultant and Deputy Head and Ms. Shinta Rotty, Consultant and Project Manager.

The first half of the session rounded up with a Q&A session with the speakers regarding their presentations. The session was chaired by Mr. David Chin, Executive Director, Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF).

A forum discussion entitled “Why is the grass always greener on the other side? Insights and Review of how to attract, develop and retain talents in the maritime industry” concluded the day’s programme. The panelists were Mr Tay Yeow Min, Assistant Director, IMC Capability Development, Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Mr David Chin, Executive Director, SMF, Mr Daniel Tan, Executive Director, Singapore Shipping Association (SSA), and Mr Goh Teik Poh, President, South Asia Region, APL Ltd.
